Aldingbourne and
Westergate
The name Aldingbourne comes from that of a Saxon Chieftain
and means Elda's home by the stream.
The villages of Aldingbourne, Lidsey, Nyton, Norton,
Westergate and Woodgate lie in the parish of Aldingbourne,
one of the largest parishes in England. This area is on the
western boundary of Arun District and approximately five
miles east of Chichester.
The villages have their own primary and secondary schools.
Aldingbourne
Primary School is a popular and highly regarded
one-form entry village school in this semi-rural location.
Westergate Community College
is a mixed comprehensive catering for all levels of
ability 11- 16. A new school building was fully opened
January 2000 and it is set in spacious grounds with the Six
Villages Sports Centre part of the campus.
There are a couple of "one stop" style shops along the main
street. Aldingbourne Village Stores is also a Post office
and off licence.
St Mary the Virgin, Aldingbourne is mentioned in the
Doomsday Book and is a Grade 1 listed building.
Recreational facilities include the Aldingbourne Community
Centre and playing field at Oliver's Meadow is an excellent
facility tucked away behind Westergate Street. There are
also tennis courts, a bowling green and a children's
playground. Many community groups meet there - Aldingbourne
& District Bowls Club, Tennis Club, Bell Ringers, Retirement
Club, and Women’s Institute. A Parent & Toddler Group meets
at the Westergate Methodist Church every Tuesday and Bobby
Bears for 3-5 yr olds every Wednesday.
